I grew up in the 60's, when it seems that kids were kept on a much looser rein than they are today. Here's a song about a lazy summer in south Hertfordshire.

An apple for the teacher
Taking the school bus every day
Meeting friends down in the park
And making monsters out of clay

And it feels a long time ago
But it was only yesterday

Summer days on the hillside
Watching the roads built from afar
Hiding inside a tree stump
And seaside trips in the car

And it feels a long time ago
But it was only yesterday

Visions of childhood
Staying so long in my mind

No-one seemed to notice
As we played in the fields
Making houses out of hay bales
Only coming home for meals

And it feels a long time ago
But it was only yesterday
